There's no need to feel overwhelmed when shopping for new area rugs. Our rug experts can help you learn some of the common terms that will make the process easier!

Backing

The base of the rug that the pile has been stitched or woven onto. Holds the rug together and comes in a wide variety of materials depending on the quality.

Weave

Refers to the type of technique used during the rug construction, and each type of weave refers both to the creation process and the finished rug.

Flat-Weave

Rugs made by hand on a loom that once finished are thin yet durable, easy to clean, allergen resistant, and good for low-traffic areas.

Cross-Woven

Rug weave that is done from side to side rather than up and down, which allows for delicate detailing, more colors, and subtle color change across the pattern.

Runner

Narrow, rectangular rug typically used in a hallway, transitional spaces between rooms, or on staircase.

Rug Pad

Thin, protective layer of material, usually made of rubber or similar material, that helps secure the rug on the floor and provide slip resistance.

Shag

Playful retro rug style, typically in one solid color, that is hand-tufted for a premium, soft feeling underfoot.

Persian

Jute

Naturally occurring plant fiber that when woven creates a strong, course thread. Jute area rugs are environmentally friendly, durable, color-fast, and fade resistant.

Sisal

Derived from the agave plant, a naturally occurring fiber that creates a strong material that blends nicely with other rug materials such as wool or acrylic.

Natural Dyes

Rug dyes that have been made from organic or all-natural materials derived from the earth such as plants and minerals.

New Zealand Wool
