Pile Weave
Pile weave or knotted weave is the popular method where the rug is woven by a creation of knots. A short yarn is tied around two warp strands to create a knot on the rug surface. After a row of knots is complete, more strands of weft are passed through a complete set of warp strands. The knots and weft strands are beaten with a comb to secure the knots in place. Different weaving groups use different types of knots.
Flat Weave
Flat weave technique does not use knots in the weave. Warp strands are used as the foundation and weft stands are used in creating the rug patterns. Weft strands are simply passed through the warp strands, and these rugs are called flat weaves since no knots are used and the resulting surface looks flat.
Hand-Tufted
These rugs are created by pushing wool or acrylic yarn through a primary backing, not by tying knots into the foundation. Holding the tufts in place, a rug maker applies a secondary foundation, then a third and final cloth backing. Lastly, the tops of the looped tufts are sheared to create the pile, which is determined by how much yarn is cut off.
Rug Dyes
Rug dyes are either natural or synthetic. Natural dyes include plant dyes, animal dyes, and mineral dyes. These colors and shades are determined by the type of material used and the use of different mordants. Synthetic dyes are easy-to-use and less expensive with a wider range of colors. Colorfast synthetic dyes retain their intensity despite exposure to light and water and are produced in many vibrant hues.
Rug Sizes
Rugs are created in many different sizes to fit different rooms and dimensions. For an entranceway or foyer, a 2’x3’ rug is a great starting point, and you can adjust the size as needed. Start with a 2’ rug for runners and select a length up to 12’ to cover the entire hallway. For larger spaces, a bigger 10’, 11’, or 12’ area rug will allow you to fit all legs of a couch or table on the rug and frame open space. In your dining room, purchase a rug that’s large enough to fit all legs of the dining table and match the shape of your rug to mirror the table such as round, square, rectangular, or octagonal.
Rug Backing
Rug backings must be compatible with your flooring type to prevent damage. Avoid area rugs with synthetic rubber or latex backing on genuine hardwood floors. Do not use area rugs with rubber backing on your luxury vinyl floors. Rubber backing will also react chemically with laminate floors. If you are using area rugs in high moisture areas, use rugs with latex backing to prevent slips. Area rugs with latex backing will leave a sticky residue that remains on laminate flooring and luxury vinyl flooring.
