Ceramic Tile

Ceramic tile is made from different clays, clay powder, silica, feldspar, and minerals, pressed and fired to reach a dense construction. Materials are blended together with water to create a homogeneous liquid clay which ensures consistency. The clay is loaded into hoppers, fed into a hydraulic press, and pressed into tile shapes at very high pressure. Tile is then fired, polished, and rectified.

Porcelain Tile

Porcelain tiles are a type of denser ceramic tile made with higher silica content and fired at much higher temperatures. They are made by the same production methods but in the case of unglazed porcelain, will miss the glazing stage. Unglazed porcelain can be polished after firing and both glazed and unglazed porcelain can be rectified, or trimmed for uniformity.

Glazed Tile

A conveyor line deposits a liquid glaze over the tile surface, and tile makers can achieve many different effects and finishes. More colored glazes can be applied through printing via digital glazing machines that are similar to inkjet printers.

Natural Stone Tile

These tiles are cut from large blocks of quarried natural stone, sawn into slabs or smaller blocks that can be cut down into stone tiles. Some stone will be reinforced with epoxy and mesh backing to reduce the likelihood of cracks. Cut stone is then polished to the desired finish, either or fully polished, and no two stone tiles are the same.

Mosaic Tile

Tile that is often presented with different sizes, colors, shapes, or even materials, set in a mesh-mounted sheet for easier DIY installation. Eliminating the need for grout work, mosaic tile can be found in ceramic, porcelain, glass, stone, or metal, either set randomly or in a pattern.

Patterned Tile

Porcelain or ceramic tiles that already feature an intricate pattern or design stamped or painted onto the tile surface. Patterned tile is used to create visual interest and make the floor become a standout design element. Also called decorative tile, this style continues to be used across decades.
